GIS for ESL and other Education GIS News
"Exclusive content" from MultiBrief includes an artilce on Uses for GIS mapping technology in fields of ESL. It's sadly mostly about using GIS to create and perhaps fund ESL programs and less about how to use GIS in actual ESL education. It does note free GIS software including Esri tools and the open-source QGIS project.
For example, over the weekend, the St. Vrain Valley School District in Longmont, Colorado, hosted an 18-hour hackathon at its Innovation Center, where teams of up to five students competed for $5,000 in cash and prizes in two application-development categories: educational gaming and teenage consumer retail. The hackathon was sponsored by Oracle ORCL +0.45% Academy, NewMark Merrill-Mountain States, Western Digital WDC +0.6%, ESRI, and CU Scalable Gaming.

SIBA Gives its support to the proposed Centre of Research Excellence (CoRE) at University of Canterbury, NZ focused upon GeoSpatial.
...SIBA have offered assistance and support both directly and through its members - with the key role being to extend the reach of the work done by the CoRE. This may be achieved in a number of ways including helping to raise awareness externally; to provide industry feedback on research proposals; and to provide a connection into the business world.
