GIS Education News Weekly: K-12 Story Map, Day of Geography, QGIS Academy

ConnectED Schools, NEEsri K-12 Story Map

Esri has posted a K-12 story map: GIS in US K12 Education.

GIS is helping students learn, engage, and build for college and career. Spread the word!
The map includes locations of K-12 Esri licenses, ConnectED licenses (right), geomentor offers, educators looking for mentors and T3G staff and participants. Visitors are invited to add themselves to the map.

Day of Geography

Day of Geography is set for Nov 17, 2014, the Monday of Geography Awareness Week. The idea? Have those who work in geography (GIS and related areas) blog about their day to better expose the public about how what we do matters. Darrin Platakis, the Geospatial Niagara fellow, is behind it.

QGIS Academy

A five course series starts in September from the QGIS Academy. Completing the all online courses results in a certificate. I see that John Van Hoesen from Green Mountain College is involved. That's a plus! Fee? Unclear.
Geo for Higher Ed Summit

Google Earth Outreach's Geo for Higher Ed Summit was Aug 11-13. You can find all the docs (slide decks, tutorials, etc.) here.

More Funding for History of Cartography

The University of Wisconsin's History of Cartography Project has been awarded a five-year grant from the National Science Foundation to study the origins and development of modern cartography. The research will facilitate preparation of Cartography in the Nineteenth Century, Volume Five of the groundbreaking History of Cartography series.
