GIS Education News Weekly: Census Quiz App, GeoHumanities at Penn State, ConnectED

Census Mobile Quiz: Statistical Literacy of U.S. Population

The U.S. Census Bureau today released Census PoP Quiz, a new interactive mobile application that challenges users' knowledge of demographic facts for all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The new app, which draws from the Census Bureau's American Community Survey, aims to raise statistical literacy about the U.S. population.

I'd love for educators to let me know if this raises issues about statistical literacy in the U.S. and how that fits into school standards and goals.

GeoHumanities at Penn State

[Hélène] Huet, a doctoral candidate in the Department of French and Francophone Studies, is writing her dissertation on the works of and the relationships between some of the writers, publishers and illustrators of the Decadent movement in late 19th-century France. She found that the writers’ proximity to their publishers played a role in shaping their collaborations.

She did her research using ArcGIS but found authors' locations via Google Earth.

ArcGIS MOOC Returns Sept 1

An updated version of the GIS Basics MOOC (enroll) offered by Pace University professor Peggy Minnis will start on September 1. The new version titled Desktop GIS (syllabus) will again focus on ArcGIS Desktop 10.2 but the course is now structured around three units across its 12 weeks. More at APB.
Apps for GISP and ArcGIS Certification

There are now free and non-free Android apps to practice for GISCI's GISP and Esri's certification tests. Caveat Emptor.

Another ConnectED Webinar

The State Educational Technology Directors Association (SETDA), the principal membership association representing U.S. state and territorial educational technology leaders, announced today it is accepting RSVPs to a free, back-to-school webinar it is hosting on Thursday, September 11, 2014 from 2 - 3:15pm ET to describe how U.S. K-12 educators can access the $2 billion in donated and discounted educational technology being made available under President Obama's ConnectED Initiative.

Companies involved, including Esri, will pitch their offerings.

Sew Your Commute

Students at the Oregon College of Art and Craft are trying something a bit more contemplative with their three-week "Thread Lines" project at Northwest Portland's Museum of Contemporary Craft.

They're inviting the public to come in on off the street, grab a piece of colored thread and stitch their daily commutes into a giant fabric map of Portland suspended from the rafters.

There's a video, too. I hope they invite some transportation or geography folks to make sense of what is created.

Peer Grading in a MOOC

The paper Peer Grading in a MOOC: Reliability, Validity, and Perceived Effects suggests peer grading is consistent and matches instructor grading quite well. The data is from the Penn State map MOOC from last year.

First Section of QGIS Academy Closed

Philip Davis reports: "First section is CLOSED. Don't miss our second one." Classes are limited to 25 and new ones come online if an instructor is available. See details in this PDF. The nine page document also details how to register.
