ERM Source Code Goes Open Source

Last week Earth Resource Mapping announced it had made its source code for read/write of its ECW and the ISO standard JPEG 2000 available under GPL-style licensing. Essentially, the code is available for use in any GPL-style application (that is, one not for sale, among other things). ThatТs a pretty big step for a small company wrangling for space in the image compression marketplace with LizardTech, Luratech and others. ERM was an early watcher and supporter of JPEG 2000 and has provided developer friendly licensing of its products for some years. The open source GIS community will be happy to see this level of support. I hope to see ERM at the Open Source GIS conference this spring in Minneapolis.
