Banning High School in southern California is getting ready for the new school year, including for the first time, GIS classes. A new school building is under construction and expected to be completed next April. Two of the 23 classrooms are for teaching GIS.
South Central College in Mankato, MN will receive a National Science Foundation grant for $200,000 to bolster its civil engineering program with a geographic information systems component. The school will develop three GIS courses which can be part of the CE degree or along with an existing intro course, taken for a certificate.
Palomar College (California) also received an NSF grant; this one was for $413,000 to upgrade the GIS facilities and technology, according to Wing Cheung, Palomar College assistant geography professor. The GIS program is part of Palomar College’s Archaeology department, which offers an Associates Degree in GIS, Certificate of Proficiency or a Certificate of Achievement.
Mississippi State University Parking Services created a live map for students to view where the shuttle is and when it will be at each shuttle stop. The site can be viewed on the Internet application with smart phones and informational signs will be hung at shuttle stops in the coming months. The hope is to get students park at remote lots and use the shuttle on campus. Like most campuses, the school has limited parking.
The new MU (Univ. of Missouri) iPhone application made its debut four days early, on Aug. 20. This free app contains a campus map, news, dining hall menus, directory and event calendar and has been downloaded more than 1000 times. Feedback goes directly to IT and some 20 substantive e-mails with input have already been received.
