Education Tidbits

Elizabeth D. Capaldi, provost and executive vice president of Arizona State Univeristy announced the appointment of Luc Anselin as the first to hold the Walter Isard Chair. She said, “Walter Isard is a leader in regional science, an early example of a new, interdisciplinary field of study to problems ranging from spatial economics to transportation to geographical information systems.”  Anselin is widely published on topics dealing with spatial and regional analysis, including a much cited book “Spatial Econometrics,”; he’s also the founding director of ASU’s School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning.

Idaho State University’s Department of Geosciences has authored a series of 3-D videos and interactive maps that explore the geology and geography of the state.

The videos combine standard photography with satellite imagery and LiDAR to illustrate the topography regions in southeast Idaho, including American Falls Reservoir, Henry’s Lake, Upper Mesa Falls, and Palisades Reservoir. Some come with study guides.

Joel M. Caplan teaches a a graduate class entitled Crime Mapping and GIS for Public Safety at the School of Criminal Justice at Rutgers University in Newark. Since no text book was available, he wrote his own GIS for Public Safety: An Annotated Guide to ArcGIS Tools and Procedures and made it free to anyone on the Net. After receiving a thank you from Dr. Nandan Nandakumar, the head of the Department of Geography at Government College Kariavattom in Kerala, India, Caplan arranged for ESRI to send over some other texts and students at Rutgers used money from a fundraiser to send on a GPS.
