Data Licenses are Different from Software/Content Licenses

Just last month there were many discussions (here’s but one) about the challenges of merging two key datasets relate to Haiti - OpenStreetMap’s and Google Map Makers. Licensing made that act difficult/impossible.

In light of that, it’s worthwhile, perhaps to read the Panton Principles, four simply written statements about “best practices” for licensing data. One biggy: don’t use a software license or a content license for data; use a license specifically written for data. There’s a list of those here.
