ABC (Australia) Geocodes the News with Mixed Results

Gary Price at Ask/ResourceShelf and DocuTicker shares a finding on online mapping at the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, ABC.

Specifically, when you run searches on the news database you’ll spot a link next to each result labeled “Show in Map.”. Example.

You can then see the result using Google, Yahoo, or Live.com [Actually it says “Virtual Earth - yes the names do change! - ABS]

Very basic. For example, when I searched for the Sydney Airport I just got a pointer on Sydney and not directly on the airport.

Non-Australian cities show the link but come back without any maps. Examples.

From what I can tell, it is simply looking for Australian city names in a story.

Btw, these maps are also linked on the actual story text page.
Example.

Nice start but needs work to make it truly valuable.

Reminds me of both MetaCarta today and what Northern Light was doing seven years ago this month.
