3D Abu Dhabi and other Government GIS News
Planning will be the focus of the Abu Dhabi City Municipality's under development 3D map being made in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council and relevant authorities. Built on GIS, the project is said to be the first-of-its-kind in the world in terms of size, technologies and solutions adopted.

According to Anthony Giles, warrant officer for the [UK] MoD [Ministry of Defence] and part of the Royal Engineers, it is implementing Esri’s GEO Viewer in for troops in Afghanistan “as we speak”. The technology produces maps with more than 350 layers of information, such as the location of the latest IEDs (improvised explosive devices) and casualties.
They still use paper maps, but the big use of the field tool is to analyze at what locations patrols can be seen by others. The MOD is upgrading ArcGIS 9.3.1 to 10.1.
