Podcast: Landsat 5 Retrospective...an Interview with Dr. Tom Loveland, USGS EROS Data Center
On March 3rd, the U. S. Geological Survey marked the 25th anniversary of the launch of the Landsat 5. The earth imaging satellite in a sun synchronous orbit with the Thematic Mapper (TM) payload offered both better spectral and spatial resolution than previous Landsat missions with the Multispectral Scanner (MSS). Editor in chief Joe Francica speaks with Dr. Tom Loveland, a USGS scientist at the EROS Data Center with over 30 years of experience with the Landsat mission.
Dr. Loveland was among the first to create continental and global-scale land cover data sets derived from remotely-sensed imagery. He currently leads a USGS research team that is developing a contemporary land cover history of the United States. In addition, Dr. Loveland is leading the Landsat Data Continuity Mission Science Team and is a member of the NASA National Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System (NPOESS) Preparatory Project science team. He is a member of the editorial board for the Journal of Land Use Sciences and has served in leadership roles in a number of national and international science organizations including the American Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, Climate Change Science Program, and the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme. Dr. Loveland has published almost 90 scientific papers and has received career achievement awards from the American Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing and the Association of American Geographers. Dr. Loveland has B.S. and M.S. degrees in geography from South Dakota State University and a Ph.D. in geography from the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Podcast: The Anatomy of a Startup: Deeda.com-Aggregating and Geospatially Enabling Social Nets
This podcast features Atif Khan, Founder and CEO of Deeda.com. Khan speaks extensively on setbacks he has faced and successes he has celebrated in the process of starting his company Deeda.com. Deeda is a social networking aggregation tool. Basically, once your friends approve, Deeda will compile their Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn and other profiles onto one convenient portal. You can see when and what they are doing or saying without flipping between sites. The geospatial advantage to Deeda - based on their postings to social network sites, you can track your friends on a map. Pretend “Bob” lives in Detroit but is at a conference in Miami. Deeda will show Bob’s movement across the country and beyond. What’s better than that, pretend Bob has a birthday while he’s in Miami and you want to send him a little something. You can buy him a Starbucks coffee card through Deeda and he can redeem it in Miami, back in Detroit or wherever he chooses – the card travels with him. Khan’s creativity and drive while building his company and during this presentation is infectious and well worth your time. [Produced by: Clay Burton Productions and Endpoint Environmental LLC, Producers of the Web 2.0 Mapping and Social Networks Meetup Group in conjunction with Directions Media.]
The presentation was recorded at Google headquarters on December 16, 2008, and lasts for approximately 37 minutes.

Podcast: Spatial Infrastructure-A Critical Part of Stimulating the Economy and Protecting the Nation's Assets
Last week, The Geospatial Information & Technology Association (GITA) announced the release of Spatial Infrastructures, [PDF] the second white paper to be published in the Geospatial Dimensions of Critical Infrastructure Protection and Emergency Response (CIP-ER) white paper series, which will include at least six more white papers published into the spring of 2009.
In this interview, Directions Magazine Editor in Chief Joe Francica speaks with John Moeller of Northrop Grumman, the paper's author, and Bob Samborski, executive director of GITA. The discussion focuses on driving awareness of geospatial technology to a broader audience as well as sustainable development, geospatial standards and the recent initiatives of the Coalition of Geospatial Organizations (COGO) to bring awareness of geospatial technology to our nation's policy makers.
The paper comes at a critical time for the geospatial community as COGO, GITA and others attempt to push Congress to support better oversight of government geospatial initiatives, especially in light of the economic stimulus package being sought by the Obama administration. [Also in this interview you will hear reference to the American Society of Civil Engineers, which recently issued its 2009 Report Card for America's Infrastructure.]
The interview lasts for approximately 25 minutes.

Podcast: Exclusive Interview with Mike Hickey, President, Pitney Bowes Business Insight
For this exclusive interview, Directions Media Editor in Chief Joe Francica spoke with Mike Hickey, president of Pitney Bowes Business Insight, about the recently announced business unit composed of Pitney Bowes MapInfo and Group 1 Software. After the acquisition of MapInfo in 2007, Hickey took charge of this unit. He was tasked with overseeing the synergy that existed between these two companies focused on business geographics and location intelligence. He would also need to determine where this unit fit within the parent company's primary business, mailstream technology.
Hickey provides details on the renaming of the business unit, the retention of the MapInfo brand, and today's economic climate. "Your competition now isn’t just people that are in the same business as you; your competition is anybody that is competing for IT dollars, said Hickey. "You have to have a pretty strong value proposition and return on investment with your clients." [The interview lasts 14:30]

Podcast: Location and its Relevance to Mapping and Social Networks
![]()
This podcast features Chris Butler, Independent LBS Evangelist. Butler discusses "Location, Awareness" and the context in which it applies to mapping and social networks. It is a high level, compelling, but inherently intuitive lecture on how context – who, when, where, why, what, and how – is valuable to your application, product or service. We usually try to answer one, maybe two of this variables when designing our next hot widget; Butler challenges us to include not one or two but all variables. However he gives us a few rules to conceptualize and effectively implement the process. For all persons interested in taking their application to the next level, this is an excellent presentation.
