MapInfo 10.0 to have Layered PDF Output
Pitney Bowes Business Insight has shared a bit more about the upcoming release of MapInfo Professional 10.0.
MapInfo Professional will include layered PDF output. The newest feature lets users turn specific layers in a map on and off when viewing a map. As a result, this greatly reduces the number of maps that people need to make. In the past, an individual may have been required to make several different maps for different departments in one organization. Now, with a layered PDF, one map can be created with multiple parties being able to view the layer that's most relevant to them or have more than one view of a map.

MapInfo Pro v10 to Support PostGIS
MapInfo Professional version 10 will be officially announced in June, probably in conjunction with "Insights '09" the Pitney Bowes Business Insight User Conference in Orlando, but the company is already giving us some inside information about the new features. Today, we understand that the new version will offer enhanced data access including support for PostGIS. MI Pro already supports Microsoft SQL Server 2008. Stay tuned for more information coming each week leading up to the announcement.

Podcast: Gathering Data from the Asia Pacific Region-Obstacles and Successes
Geospatial data are relatively easy to obtain in the U.S. but what about in the Asia Pacific region where government policy differs widely from country to country. In fact, today’s challenges in the region have moved from acquiring the spatial foundation data (streets, basic demographics, and political boundaries) to data with finer demographic and geographic granularity. Editor in chief Joe Francica spoke with Sean Richards, director of product management for Pitney Bowes Business Insight (PBBI) in Brisbane, Australia, and Scott Robinson, director of global data products for PBBI about the obstacles to success and whether countries recognize the benefit of a more open data policy.

PB Insights (MapInfo User Conference/MapWorld) 2 for 1 Deal
Times are challenging and different vendors and events are trying to help their attendees with special offers. PB Insights (where Group 1 and MapInfo now live) just announced a two for one registration deal (via direct e-mail, dig yours up for the code) for its conference Insights 2009, June 3-5 in Orlando. But, work fast, early bird discounts end on April 15 (Wednesday). If I read it correctly, if you register before COB Wednesday, you can send two people for $795.

Podcast: Exclusive Interview with Mike Hickey, President, Pitney Bowes Business Insight
For this exclusive interview, Directions Media Editor in Chief Joe Francica spoke with Mike Hickey, president of Pitney Bowes Business Insight, about the recently announced business unit composed of Pitney Bowes MapInfo and Group 1 Software. After the acquisition of MapInfo in 2007, Hickey took charge of this unit. He was tasked with overseeing the synergy that existed between these two companies focused on business geographics and location intelligence. He would also need to determine where this unit fit within the parent company's primary business, mailstream technology.
Hickey provides details on the renaming of the business unit, the retention of the MapInfo brand, and today's economic climate. "Your competition now isn’t just people that are in the same business as you; your competition is anybody that is competing for IT dollars, said Hickey. "You have to have a pretty strong value proposition and return on investment with your clients." [The interview lasts 14:30]

Johnny's Lunch Coming to Pittsburgh
I knew nothing of the hot dog chain until we ran an article about its location technology strategy (Pitney Bowes Business Insight, aka MapInfo). There were an amazing number of comments from non-GIS people to express their love of the place. So, at least those in Pittsburg can stop adding comments asking for a store nearby!
