Mass Supreme Judicial Court: Installing GPS with Warrant OK
The highest court in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts upheld the right of police to install GPS tracking device to track suspects so long as a judge grants a warrant. The court ruled, unanimously, that such action "does not violate the ban on unreasonable search and seizure in the state’s Declaration of Rights."
But, there are some stipulations: The officers, must of course convince a judge a warrant is appropriate and the "devices can be installed for up to 15 days before police must show why the devices need to remain in place."

Alberta Judge Pro on GPS for Wandering Seniors; Others Consider it a Privacy Issue
After lots of discussion about using GPS for parolees, this is the next frontier. The judge feels GPS tracking can save lives. Others, including the Alzheimer Society of Canada, think it's an invasion of privacy and may be used in place of appropriate care.

Don't Track Kids, Track the Folks Checking Up on the Kids
Florida is among the first states to use GPS, digital photography and cell technology to insure that case workers responsible for the state's challenged children are doing their jobs.
The Florida Department of Children and Families new Blackberry app upload information directly to the state database in Tallahassee at each home visit. Social workers snap the child's picture which is sent on to the database stamped with a date, time and GPS coordinates. That helps document visits and keep workers safe in rough neighborhoods. It may also prevent some false records that led to children being lost forever.
For now the app is in use in Miami-Dade and Monroe counties now, with a rollout to the entire data planned for October.

EFF Civil Liberties Director: We Need Tech for Privacy Protection; Laws are Not Doing the Job
The Electronic Frontier Foundation's Civil Liberties Director Jennifer Granick put it a bit more elegantly at the Privacy Enhancing Technologies Symposium held at the University of Washington in Seattle yesterday.
"We need technology. Citizens need technology to protect themselves because the law is not doing it."
The most well-publicized privacy invasions revolved around location tracking. She explained how the 4th amendment to the constitution (against unlawful search and seizure) only applies at home, leaving many places where tracking can legally occur. Some states do require a warrant to use a GPS for tracking.

Ubisense Tracking Cow Health
The company, which uses active tags to determine their locations, now has them on cows in partnership with Danish Smarterfarming. The tags help farmers track behavior which can help identify illness. For example, one disease is preceded by shorter eating times a few days before the animal becomes ill. The tags could help find "soon to be ill" cows and speed treatment, which means, fewer sick days and more milk.

Trash Track: MIT Tracks "Removal Chain"
Two cities, Seattle and New York will be participating in the project from the MIT SENSEable City Lab. It's just what you might think: representative trash from volunteer households will be tagged (they didn't get into the tech), then its path through the waste stream is publicly mapped in real time. The real time data will be available on the Web beginning in September. The idea? The more we know about where our trash goes, the more likely we are to aim for recyclable products over those that will end up in landfills.
