Steven Ramage's invitation to participate in OGC survey
1Spatial's Steven Ramage contacted us last week in his capacity as a member of the Open Geospatial Consortium's (OGC's) Data Quality Working Group regarding an effort in which he is involved. He wanted to make our readership aware of an OGC survey to collect data to "ascertain what organizations involved in the market place currently understand and mean when using the term spatial data quality." Here are Ramage's reasons why you should pay attention to this effort, and respond to the survey.
- You'll have an opportunity to highlight what you see as the drivers and issues for spatial data quality.
- You can contribute to an industry-wide issue that spans all continents.
- You'll be a part of the standards process and help determine mechanisms for building on ISO19000 series standards relating to data quality.
- You can help build momentum in the industry around spatial data quality and share ideas and approaches.
- You'll need to think carefully about the bottom line impact of not having “fit for purpose” data within your own organization.
I would guess that every reader of Directions Magazine has faced spatial data quality problems during their careers. An article by Ramage (PDF, page 5) about the effort appeared in GITA's Networks Magazine. You can can access the survey directly.

Off topic: Wikimapia
I heard a little blurb about Wikimapia on NPR's All Things Considered on Dec. 28. Atanas Entchev blogged about Wikimapia last May when it first came out. It's a site that lets you enter "stuff about places." When I reflected about the site's name, I had to chuckle a little bit. The word "geography" derives from the Latin words that mean "describe the earth," which is exactly what this site is about. But I guess a site titled "geography" wouldn't really fly in this age of cool-e-names. (Besides, geography.com, .net and .org are already taken...)

Off Topic: Must See Movie for Portrayal of Geographic Concepts
I saw Al Gore's movie over the weekend, An Inconvenient Truth, and enjoyed it immensely. Regardless of your political leanings, most readers of this blog will enjoy it for its cool maps and use of geospatial technologies to analyze and portray the points he's making. The movie description makes it sound a little boring, but even my ten-year-old found it fascinating. See it if you can!
