Oracle and Pentaho have announced the support for bringing business intelligence (BI) applications to the iPhone. I see this as a more important game changer that could potentially unseat RIM as the perferred business communication device that also brings location technology into the mix. While Pentaho, an open source BI application, have already created a way to integate Google Maps with their software, Oracle has been pushing Oracle Maps more than a Google Maps mashup. GeoEye announced that GeoEye-1, which will acquire both 0.41-meter panchromatic and 1.65-meter multispectral imagery, arrived at Vandenburg Air Force Base on July 10. The anticipated launch is August 22 on a Delta II rocket and GeoEye will stream the launch "live." More details are available from GeoEye.

The New York Times is reporting today that the U.S. Senate Commerce Committee will hold hearings on how Internet marketers and ISP can track your surfing behavior. Watchdog agencies are suggesting that some are violating federal law. NebuAd, an Internet marketing company that works with ISPs to help track web activity is providing a way for Web users to "opt-out" of being tracked. There was no discussion in the article of how ISPs are now geotargeting Web activity but some of those commenting on the article recognized the use of IP-based location-based advertising. Once you know 'what' and 'who,' the next question is always 'where.'

In a fascinating article published yesterday in the Wall Street Journal, the city of Sacramento, CA is profiled as a model for discovering the realities of $4 gasoline and planning for "clustering the places where people live more closely with the businesses where they work and shop," according to the article. Urban planner Mike McKeever is the architect that pushed through the "smart growth" strategies (light rail, bike paths, etc.) which wasn't easy when he started on the job back when gas was half its price. The article in print provides maps showing the increase in per capita expenditures on public transportation from 2000 to 2008. The online article provides a map showing projected conjestion from development with and without Mr. McKeever's "Blueprint" for growth through 2050.
