Podcast: Implications for Twitter's Geolocation API

Last week Twitter released its geolocation API, an interface for developers to tack on, and gain access to the point locations from which tweets are sent, so long as users turn it "on." What are the possibilities for a giant, near-real time set of 140 character comments from around the world? Our editors contemplate challenges, opportunities and possible uses.

Great topic. I wrote a blog post about this very impact last week. Adding geolocation to something realtime and easy to publish is quite transformative. I don't think we really realize just how this might be used yet.

Great podcast - good point about time proximity.

I think the Twitter location API could be an interesting step towards a better proximity social networking experience. Temporal as well as physical proximity must be important, and the filtering / search will be based on cognitive or intellectual proximity to find affinity and to enable direct tweets. I expect business development, job search, and friend finding functionality to develop over the medium term. On a permission basis, Twitter users will see advantages for continuous location updates, independent of Tweets, to enable relevant information and introduction opportunities. In any case this is an important development in mobile social networking.
