Corporate Owners: Geotech Not that Important in 2009

The Tenth Annual Survey of Owners from FMI Corp., and CMAA (Construction Management Assn. of America) McLean, Va., resulted in a report: Inflection Point: Defining the Future of the Worldwide Construction Industry. The effort surveyed 191 participants, representing various owner types, types of construction, industry sectors, and geographies.

Here's the relevant data for our world:

The study shows maintenance technology—GIS (geographic information systems), GPS (global positioning system), and BIM (building information modeling)—was one of the least important factors in 2009. However, as we look out to 2014 FMI says the importance of this type of technology will rise for owners.

The CMAA has a very narrow view of the benefits of GIS and BIM as lifecycle technologies, which is what they are, especially at a time like this when cost and efficiency need to work together like never before.

I foresee a lot of money spent in the future on do-overs and accurate conversions. Penny wise, pound foolish.

From the broad perspective of a manager with oversight across large-budget programs, the actual cost and impact of GIS and related technologies is, in fact, a very small portion of the total program cost.

Yeah, yeah, it's disproportionately effective and can support greater cost efficiencies and such - sure, we all know that - but for a construction manager there are many, many, many ways to squeeze margin out of a job.

Best to keep in mind the larger picture when presenting the impact statements, and focus on simplifying processes, expediting implementation, and reducing uncertainty.
