Boise Journo Maps City Council Election Returns Using QGIS, MapWindow and More

Nathaniel Hoffman who writes for the Boise (ID) Weekly details how he (and perhaps a team?) took the ESRI shapefile data from city and with some effort, created a Google Map from it. He had some trouble with projections, but did make a map. He also is a bit confused, suggesting that Google Maps is open source (it's not).

I applaud his (the team's?) efforts and hope he can get some help for a smoother methodology!

Hey Adena - Thanks for the post... I don't really have a team, though I did ask for some advice along the way, including from these guys: http://www.fairdata2000.com/SummerFood/SFS_Example.html

I don't consider Google Maps open source, though I appreciate the maps and the framework that Google provides... is there a true open source method for layering my map on a zoom-able, pan-able streetmap that you'd recommend ... I'd much rather own the rights to my own map!

You could go with the OpenLayers framework (http://openlayers.org) which will still give you access to Google Maps or allow you to switch to Bing etc with only a parameter change. If you really want to own your map then you could use openstreetmap as a base map or pull in roads and satellite imagery from the National Map (http://seamless.usgs.gov/website/seamless/viewer.htm).
