"AmericaView" Bill Passes House

Remote Sensing

The House passed the bill (2489, "To authorize a national cooperative geospatial imagery program through the United States Geological Survey to promote use of remote sensing data.") that would provide $10 million a year for a national grant program to make geospatial imagery more available and usable. The funds would go to the Dept of Interior and be distributed until 2019.

Imagery for America might have ended up with a viable program if they'd asked for a Billion, instead of the pitiful $10mil a year dribble appropriated against their $175million ask.

The AmericaView program has a very different set of goals than the Imagery for America program. Rather than being a mechanism for funding the collection of imagery, AmericaView focuses by supporting applied research, K-16 education, workforce development, and technology transfer
related to remote sensing data and technologies. Within AmericaView, there are 36 "StateView" consortia that support the activities of their academic, non-profit, government, and commerical member organizations that use (or want to learn to use) remote sensing data and technologies.

I agree. Los Angeles County alone is a few million dollars to capture (at 4" resolution that is).

The $9M spent in 2007 for NAIP provided 11 states imagery at 1M and 3 states at 2M. The $14M '08 NAIP budget provided 20 states at 1M. If cities/states want 4-6" pixels, then fund it yourself and don't ask the US taxpayer to pony up for your wants (vs. the real need).

Wants & needs differ according to areas of interest.

But yes, you are correct, Mr. Solday. Let the local interests pay for the content they need out of local levies - not MY tax dollars from across the country.

This bill will be squandered in little pieces, bit by bit, and much will time out because the folks in Rolla will be unable to complete their procurements before next October rolls around.

Some might complain that the money won't be spent and it's wasted...but is it waste not to spend something? Personally, I'm happy the procurement folks won't be able to spend it fast enough.
