Another indication GPS tracking is a commodity

Pilot, the fuel/convenience stores often seen at travel plazas, just stuck a deal with PROCON to offer fleet services tracking. The key selling point? The cost is added to Pilot's fuel card system.

The key selling point is companies that adopt GPS tracking cut their fuel costs by 20-30% on average. Drivers don't speed as much, don't use their vehicles outside of where they should be and reduce their idle time.

With fuel costs rising again, doesn't it make sense to do whatever you can to cut your fuel costs?

A company with a fleet of 20 vehicles can save several thousand dollars every month in fuel costs.

All true. But how clever to tie it in to your existing fuel distributor and not some unknown GPS tracking company!

For many consumers, GPS tracking has become a part of everyday life--and I'm not sure too many care how it works or whose technology is involved. But I think in the case (and most others) the "buyer" of GPS Tracking was Pilot--and whether buyers see it as a commodity or not may be the bigger question.

I agree regarding consumers. But this solution (aimed at fleets, not consumers) is being re-sold by the a company (Pilot) that sells gas and provides travel needs through its stores. There's no need for a fleet manager to open a relationship with a specialty outfit for tracking. That suggests to me that Pilot for one, sees it as a commodity it can effectively resell to its existing fleet customers.
