GIS, Maps and Katrina - Sept 8
Coverge of mapping, GIS and geospatial technologies on Sept 8.
Reporting
“Nala and Da-vid Howard, residents of the Gentilly neighborhood of New Orleans that borders Lake Pontchartrain, were among the early arrivals. They left before the storm hit, driving to Meridian, Mississippi and then on to friends at 79th and Essex in Chicago three days later. Their apartment is definitely under water, Nala Howard said. They went to a topographical map online and saw their rental house flooded up to its roof.”
Chicago Journal
“’The problem is that 75% of U.S. flood hazard maps are outdated, ‘which greatly limits their value in reducing flood losses to lives and property,’" Michael Bullock, of Intermap Federal Services, told a Congressional committee in July.”
Forbes
Aiding
“A two-man firefighter team of David Etz and Richard Ivy from the city of Branson has gone to the Gulf Coast at the request of FEMA to assist in search, recovery and Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping of the affected area.”
