Forbes on Google Mapping and Katrina

Google is Everywhere. That’s the title of an article in Forbes highlighting how Google Earth and Google Maps are aiding the sharing of information about Katrina.

In fact, Google is getting a LOT of attention for providing this map and imagery data. There is also mention about how the grass-roots of online volunteers lead the initiative for making this map information readily available. What you don't read much about is the contribution of GIS companies.

You are correct that you are not hearing much about the contributions of the GIS companies. I've spoken with the "big four" (ESRI, Intergraph, Autodesk and MapInfo) in the last week, and they are indeed doing quite a bit, starting with trying to contact their key users in the area affected. Because their efforts are more behind the scenes than "in your face" as Googles are, it makes sense they've not hit the traditional press. That said, I'm hoping to share what I learn from the vendors with readers, as soon as the vendors are able to share their work with me. Doing the work, they and I agree, is far more important than reporting on it, especially in these early days.
