Virtual Alabama May Grow into Virtual USA

FCW reports on the effort, currently being discussed by several southern states. The idea is to allow states to share their own data across jurisdictions no matter their platform. As discussion get going David Boyd, director of DHS Science and Technology’s Command, Control and Interoperability Division reports technology is not the issue, it's getting the players on the same page.

The whole article sounds like every OGC conversation I ever heard. I guess it's good to see progress, but the term standards is not part of the current reporting. That said, I suspect it's in the mix.

Virtual Alabama is built on Google Earth Enterprise; the technology for the pilot of gulf coast states was not detailed.

After years of listening to DHS talk about GIS, it looks like the Science Division is finally investing.

Interesting to track if the DHS GIS Mapping Organization will stop this because it's not ESRI-based.

glad its not esri based, but is google any better?
heck no. and neither is M$ virtual earth.

seeing so much critical public information get locked down by a large corporate entity that does not have the tax payers (who paid for that data) interests at heart is just as bad.

if the state govs were actually smart, they'd quit dumping tax payer monies into big corporate software licensing contracts and use geoserver or mapserver or deegree or even world wind if they had to have a globe, and spend all the funding saved on updating the data itself and making it easily and freely accessible through open standards-based web services
