Lowenstein: The future of LBS is not subscription services

LBS

Mark Lowenstein writing at Fierce Wireless is trying to be upbeat about LBS, but really he isn't. "I am not optimistic that there is a large market for subscription-based LBS." That said, he does look at the four primary ways in which location services can be monetized as the industry goes forward:

app store (free/paid divided)
LBS as part of advertising/social networks
search
packaging of where user go (for multiple uses)

This is a nice reality check.

reality indeed. LBS on its own has little or no intrinsic value - since most people usually know where they are, and never leave a fairly well-described area. As for direction-finding, in-car systems have pretty much cornered that market.

So LBS will become an additional "free" feature that creeps into phone services in order to move ahead of (or keep parity with) competition. More features, same money...or hidden in the monthly costs as the aggregate number inches up in real dollars.
