Google's U.S. Fed Sales Down

Total Telecom (UK) looked up some Google numbers on USASpending.gov and learned that Google contract dollars were down in 2008 from 2006.

Google's contracts with U.S. federal agencies have declined from $413,960 in 2006 to $81,046 in 2008.

In addition, customers listed for Google in 2006 including the Agriculture and Treasury departments do not appear in the 2008 numbers.

The government's accounting year begins Oct. 1 and ends the following Sep. 30. For the first months of the 2009 accounting year since September, Google has won $4,030 in federal contracts, according to the data.

How does this square with another article on your page titled "Federal Government Contract Spending: A Look at Geospatial". In that article, Google's 2008 revenues from the federal government were listed as follows:

Sorry I don't see a discrepancy. Both state 2008 Federal money to Google as $81,046. What am I missing that's in conflict? (I'm probably staring at it and not seeing it!)

When I saw your original post, Adena, I immediately assumed that some of the numbers were off by orders of magnitude, zeros chopped off during cut-and-paste, that kind of thing. Google only did $81K worth of business with the feds in 2008? I am not saying the number is wrong, I am saying that April probably thought (as I did), that the actual number was $81 million.

As a (hopefully meaningful) frame of reference, last year ABC made $81.1 million in a single night, from selling advertisements during the Oscars broadcast.
