You know I feel the UK government could really take an opportunity here to redeem itself of the poor decisions that led to our withdraw from space launcher programs all those years ago. Because when that happened, we consigned to history the substantial amount on public money and national expertise that had gone into the development of successful satellite launchers the like of Black Arrow, world class high altitude sounding rockets like Skylark and even the ability no less to drop rockets from high altitude aircraft and have then fly reliably to their targets, though be it to drop a nuclear warhead – Blue Steel; small point considering the current proposal I feel. As a taxpayer I would have no reservations at all should the UK government seize this opportunity to realise the expertise and investment already made, and finance a completely home-grown launcher system that could form not only the foundation of a new industrial base in the growing sector, but whose products could even be marketed to other nations and agencies.
