New GPS Warning: Going the wrong way on the highway

Network World reports that Nissan will begin testing a new feature of its navigation system that literally alerts a driver when the car is heading in the "wrong" direction on the highway. That's the cause of accidents, some fatal. The fear in Japan is that such accidents will increase, especially as the population ages.

Tests will be held on roads operated by the West Nippon Expressway Co. The plan is to have the feature available in cars in Japan by 2011.

I hope the units will have fairly accurate road network data and will check the PDOP before sounding the alarm.
I think the tolerances would be acceptable on the American Interstate System, where there are large medians often as wide or wider than the typical consumer GPS precision. What about highways with no median? It'll have to be very accurate system. You don't want erroneous error messages, especially if the error will cause the driver to jerk the wheel hard in an attempt to turn around. Maybe you should just get a taxi or not drive if you're worried about going the wrong way.

If the GPS could popup a warning when these aging drivers are driving too slow on the highway - now that would be useful!

In seriousness, GPS manufacturers and highway data providers need to do a better job of marking streets as one-way, and making that clearer on the tiny screens of GPS navigators and mobile phones. Streets that you can't legally turn onto from your current heading should be colored differently or have the international No Entry symbol displayed.

You will get old eventually too. Why not show a little tolerance to "these aging drivers"?

I'm not surprised Nissan came up with it.

In most car video games (which started in Japan) the game tell you taht you are driving the wrong way.

What surprised me is why it took so long but I have to assume it had to do testing and make it affordable to put in actual cars.
