UK's "AAA" Reports Most Members Carry Print Atlas Along with SatNav

A survey of more than 7,000 AA (UK's Automobile Association) reveals:

- 75% of the sat-nav owners still carried a road atlas and 22% agreed their sat-nav sometimes distracts them when driving.

- 61% said their sat-nav had stopped them from getting lost while 44% use it frequently, while 30% said their sat-nav had taken them to the wrong destinations

- men (47%) were more likely to have them than women (30%), with 18-24 year olds the age group most likely (43%).

I am not surprised at these statistics. Most sat-nav programs do not have a large enough screen to give the user a complete sense of "where I started from", and "where I intend to go", and where I currently am with respect to my end destination. There is a belief that sat-nav systems just work perfectly - which is not really the case. Its my view that sat-nav systems primary purpose is to provide instant location of a point and given that this is it greatest strength, sat-nav systems are should be used in conjunction with a good road atlas

I somewhat agree. However I find it much easier on me to stop and take a moment to browse through the steps the program has calculated to get a feel for where it is taking me. It only takes a minute to look ahead, then let the program take you where you want.

Yes - proper journey planning must also be carried out when using SatNav's and a paper map may help - some advice for users of SatNav's in Ireland posted here _ http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=58430030&postcount=1
