Worldwide Flight Patterns in 24-hours


Courtesy of Wired's Autopia blog, researchers at Zurich's School of Applied Science built a video that simulates the flight paths of airline traffic around the world in one 24-hour period. The video appears below but also check out the entire blog post as it has other videos showing air traffic in and out of ATL, FEDEX's daily traffic and a video of European traffic that goes into 3D mode.

As noted in the comments to the original posting, this has been done before. I remember a project at ESRI some years ago and the excellent and more recent work (2004) by Aaron Koplin at UCLA certainly comes to mind.

I found a screensaver from "Star Alliance" which is pretty neat. Allows me to zone off at work from looking at my maps to someone elses, and its hands free!

No issues; it's good for the planet and good business.
