On the Surge in OGC SDI

Last week The Carbon Project put out a press release titled Carbon Project Announces New Gaia Support Package in Response to OGC SDI Surge. I wondered about such a surge (a term which alas relates in my mind to events in Iraq not geospatial technology). I asked Jeff Harrison, president and CEO, about the nature of the surge and the reasons for it. I received this reply.

The worldwide surge of activity in developing SDI based on OGC standards is
especially pronounced in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia.

The surge is being caused by three factors -

- The maturity of OGC SDI standards, many of these have become ISO standards
and are now widely accepted

- Implementation of the technologies in standards-based commercial software
has reached a critical mass in the last 18 months - making it possible to do
"real work" instead of testing and piloting

- The public sectors embracing OGC SDI 1.0 interoperability and placing
these requirements into procurements

Huge quantities of data are now being put online. This has started a snowball effect because it now makes business sense for data custodians to add value by integrating external and internal data.

Using Open Standards is the next logical step because it makes sharing data between disparate datasets easier.

I agree with the statements made by Jeff Harrison above. Another factor influencing this growth in SDI is the availability of more robust and scalable Standards-based COTS products. CubeWerx is an important contributor of such technology. We have also notice a growth in the SDI market from organization deploying their spatial data infrastructures using OGC compliant tchnology.

The most important factor in the OGC SDI Surge is the public sector finally deciding to offer a series of Web map and data services that provide system developers with high-speed access to geographic data content. I think they've figured that migrating to a standards-based online service provider will mitigate barriers associated with accessing and manipulating their geospatial information. This model provides real-time access to their content - and lets user focus on value-added applications and processes.
Some in the public sector may have started thinking that it may not be appropriate for commercial companies like Google to control all access to geographic content.
