Terrorists Use Geotechnology

Computerworld and others report that Google Earth, GPS and other tech devices were in use in the attacks in Mumbai. My only thought: We regular folks use these everyday to do our "work," so it's not surprising these folks do, too. Have we not wrapped our heads around the idea that data and technology can be used for good or evil? I guess not.

They apparently also wore running shoes, cargo pants, and polo shirts, carried backpacks, drove inflatable boats, and communicated by Blackberry or text messaging devices.

Worryingly, they also knew how to call a taxi, and purchase a map in a shop, and ask a local for directions....

Judging the attire alone, that is so not the profile demographic for Microsoft and ESRI geospatial products.

What great responses! I think it is interesting that in our community we think of the technology we use in the same light as running shoes...just a tool of the trade. Unfortunately, those who don't understand could ultimately stifle innovation for fear of a tool they don't understand.

What's your feeling about commercial organizations that participate in kind or cash support to help in disasters and publicize those efforts?
No issues; it's good for the planet and good business.
It's ok, but does make me wonder about their motives.
