Update: "possibly, most likely, found the remains of J. Stephen Fossett"

Update 11/4/08: Confirmed via CNN.

That's the word from Madera County Sheriff John Anderson via CNN. Some bones and Fossett's license were found about 1/4 mile from where some cards and money were found about a month ago. The investigation is waiting on DNA testing for confirmation.

Okay, what's the big mystery here? This has been going on for far too long. The guy went missing. They found the plane. They found bones and his wallet near the plane. Now what's the question? Missing+plane+bones+wallet. Is there a serious question whether it's quite likely him?

Actually, there are questions. Bone fragments were found alongside the money/cards found in early October - but after examination, they were determined to be animal bones. Further, there are crashes in that area rather frequently. It's possible, though I agree unlikely, someone else's remains are out there. Only one way to be sure...test.

As a former member of the Civil Air Patrol and one who followed the massive, high-tech search effort partly through this blog, I think this story will be interesting until the tests on the bones close the case.
