Canceling of BASIC Good News for GeoEye

Chris Fernandez at PeakStocks thinks so. Bottom line:

With the BASIC program out of the way for at least one more year, and perhaps for good, the U.S. government will rely on GeoEye more and more, especially in light of the fact that GeoEye is now in possession of the highest resolution commercial satellite available today, GeoEye-1.

Let's don't forget DigitalGlobe either. DG is also flying a second generation high resolution satellite comparable to GeoEye 1. Both companies secured large contracts with the USG to deliver unspecified quantities of commercial imagery and rely heavily on that revenue stream to prosper. I'm also reluctant to write off the government's desire to come back to BASIC or a similar program. There will always be a discomfort among USG users of commercial imagery as long as they feel they are in competition with other commercial customers and that the imagery the USG tasks for collection is "out in the open". This is an issue of asset control that won't go away anytime soon.
