Pretty Picture vs. Satellite Imagery in Use

Based on coverage, the new image from GeoEye 1 of Kutztown University is getting far more play (69 hits in Google News today) than an analysis from the American Association for the Advancement of Science and Amnesty international that used change detection to determine the extent of destruction in South Ossetia (41 hits in Google News today).

Now, I know that's not a scientific analysis, but I do hope we are moving toward being as excited about what we can do with the images as just having them available.

Once raw samples are formally available for processing experimentation, Adena, I think that's when you might see more excitement. Until then...

Daniel,

I guess I was unclear. My point: The pretty picture of Kutztown Univ. seems to be getting far more coverage than perhaps is warranted. At the same time, analytical use of lower res (older) satellite imagery for damage assessment is not getting enough coverage. I really don't expect that to change when the raw imagery is available, but I hope it will!

I suppose that the attention the image has received is obviously based on the fact that it's a newer commercial sensor, and essentially everyone within the industry would be curious to see what the results of an acquisition might look like.

This would be the logical conclusion, would it not?

Of course, not being able to experiment with the raw acquisition, one might not be able to benefit from knowing what level of processing will provide value to the market. Being able to look at a sample of a true-color composite, however, usually gives most of us who have made somewhat of a specialty out of remote sensing imagery processing, a fairly decent indicator of things to come, especially in regards to the integrity and acuity of the fusion product being demonstrated.

The takeaway for me, and I think what Adena is referring to, is that this new imagery is news because it will be current, color, and high(er) resolution than what Google has now. That is exciting news for many.
Right now, which is what most press covers, millions are interested in "just having them available". Thousands are interested in "what we can do with the images".
At some point in the future, the millions will be using what the thousands will be doing, and that may make some news.
