IDC Pegs SIM Market Growth at 14.2%

Geospatial Business


David Sonnen, an analyst with IDC, said that the size of the spatial information market (SIM) is about $2.8 billion and that he pegs the compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) at 14.2%. Sonnen said that, "We don't see a lot of downside unless the economy tanks completely." Sonnen made his remarks today at the MetaCarta Public User's Group Meeting in Tysons Corner, Virginia.

Could someone explain how the $2.8 billion figure squares with the 2003 DOL comment "Geospatial industry is expected to grow from $3 billion in revenues in 1997 to $21 billion in the next few years."

Thoughts? Is IDC measuring domestic figures and DOL was referring to international ones? Or is the Spatial Information Market some subset of the Geospatial Industry. Not sure of the terms....but it does feel like I'm confusing apples and oranges.

I'm trying to get a sense of what the monetary value of the geospatial industry is currently, either in the US, or internationally. Can someone explain this?
