Open Source Text Books

Education

Slashdot highlights an LA Times front page story about professors dumping traditional text in favor of open source and non-free online texts.

We are doing that at Penn State Online Masters in GIS. So far, two texts are open source: Open Web Mapping (updated URL per course author comment below) and The Nature of Geographic Information. I'm working to open source my course (Comparative GIS) for Winter quarter.

Hi Ian,

Fine tip, such sources are always of great use, particularly in in Greenland, where I work. I teach desktop and web mapping to different professional groups. The course material for the desktop courses (MapInfo) we have built up ourselves during the years, but the web mapping course does not have any material yet, and building up from scratch for something like 2 students a year is waste of time. We are using much open source technologies, so the material from PSU would just fine.

Do you know any other sources to open source GIS courses, e.g. GRASS, Udig, Quantum, PostGIS, MapServer etc. Yours on GeoServer is OK and with links to their website.
