Everyone heads to the cloud, Pictometry backs away

Remote Sensing

I find it a bit ironic that the cloud is the buzz in much of geospatial (see Atanas' post on this) but today Pictometry announced the ability of its customers to self-host its online options for the first time. That organization has always marched to the beat of its own drummer.

I was a bit surprised by their press release yesterday, self-hosting does makes sense for many government customers with security requirements, but cloudsourcing seems to be a no-brainer for their data heavy business case everywhere else right....

Pictometry has always been able to listen to their core customers and respond well to their requests. This is very good news.

FYI - "the cloud" is a place government doesn't want to go for oh-so-many good reasons. And a few questionable ones, too, but that's government for you. See link below to OMB policy on internet connectivity
