Garmin Criticized for Offering GPS Dataset for Bars

Garmin offers a digital version of the "Good Pub Guide" for their Global Positioning System (GPS) gadgets. Some, like Margaret Decker, from the Scottish Campaign against Irresponsible Drivers, think that's irresponsible. "It is irresponsible to offer customers directions to pubs. Police campaign to stop drink-driving but the number caught doesn't seem to be falling."

Garmin gives more credit to those who use the system and the database. I wonder if Garmin (and its peers) would get the same reaction if it offered a database of locations of legal gun sellers?

Wow,
I don't see her point. Getting to the bar is not the problem, its leaving. Finding out that there is one nearby would cut down on drive time or driving altogether. Seems like a good thing to me.

Has she ever heard of a Designated Driver? Like it or not bars are destinations, and people need directions to them just like any other business. The type of person that is going to drink and drive will do it whether or not they have driving directions. The vast majority of users are responsible, and will approach going to a "new" bar the same way they do any other time they drink. I just don't see something like this promoting drinking and driving.

Where is the concern? - using a GPS is even more complicated than driving. In other words, it's still the driving not the directions that will get the mate in trouble.

Perhaps to temper Ms. Decker's conscience they could produce a sister publication of GPS-based guide for churches.

Oh I forget, there is obviously no need for that -
