BI Apps for the iPhone

Oracle and Pentaho have announced the support for bringing business intelligence (BI) applications to the iPhone. I see this as a more important game changer that could potentially unseat RIM as the perferred business communication device that also brings location technology into the mix. While Pentaho, an open source BI application, have already created a way to integate Google Maps with their software, Oracle has been pushing Oracle Maps more than a Google Maps mashup. Politely disregarding the fact that you've based this post on a -- gulp -- press release, I still fail to see how this adds up to the utter demise of RIM. Um, what?

Market share, kiddo. Not to mention how entrenched technology becomes just that. Better look that up, or ask a CIO / CTO if you need a bit more basis for such an opinion.

I could care less if BI is coming from a RIM product or Pentaho (a subsidiary of Octopimp International? so much for branding). But I do care about getting informed LBS news & opinion, not regurgitated press releases and / or casually tossed out, but utterly fact-free, blather.

C'mon. You're better than that.

Thanks for your comments. While my sources are from press announcements (most of our news comes to us in that form) my opinions are not. I believe that the iPhone's support of Microsoft Exchange will encourage more corporate CIO's to reconsider support given that many of their users are opting to try it anyway. No doubt that RIM has a commanding lead and I've offered that opinion before much to the chagrin of others who follow this blog. However, because of the support for BI apps on the iPhone, I think this offers an opening that the iPhone would not have had otherwise. Plus, my job is to inform readers who would not take the time to read through the PRs we get. And I'm not suggesting the demise of RIM, but merely that it has the "potential" to do so. Thanks again, and for the update on Pentaho.

Fair enough. But allow me to make one observation: It required an admittedly silver-tongued comment to prompt the actual post (your choice of source material notwithstanding).

I would offer analysis of my own, being in the biz, but I will leave that up to you. ; )

I would love to view a proffered analysis! Why stop now after making such "interesting", if not arresting, comments about the future of iPhone and LBS?

My take on the iPhone is that they blew it with v.1 and late to the game with v.2 with their exclusion and inclusion, respectively, of a GPS chipset. With regard to the future, that has yet to be played out and my opinion HERE, at this time, is that BI apps "could" substantially contribute to their market position as a mobile "business" handset and thereby in direct competition with RIM as I stated above. I have never waivered from my position that I believe the iPhone is a unique change agent in mobile technology. However, with respect to LBS, I felt that as a leader in mobility Apple should have made it a priority to include GPS with v1 and freeze the mobile LBS app market giving pause to both carriers and application developers. My opinions have been very clear and direct on this issue though others in the blogosphere want to broaden the scope of my arguments. Thanks for your comments...Joe

I remember, a few years ago, reading an article that mentioned legions of Japanese teenagers as the primary driver of downloadable cellular phone content - thumbs tapping at record speeds. Business folk are not likely to match these consumption habits in LBS, either.

I agree on Apple's mistake with v1 - Stevie should make up for it in short order.
