Update: Adobe Acrobat 9 Gets Mapping Tools

Update: Read the comments; I clearly didn't understand the new offering based on my reading of the Webware review.

To be clear, it's the highest priced document creation version ($699) that gets these goodies, per Webware:

Mapping features only in Acrobat Pro Extended 9 preserve geospatial coordinates and enable users to mark locations and measure distances.

That doesn't sound like it'll not bother the folks at TerraGo, the company behind GeoPDF. That solution uses software to create GeoPDFs. The output files can be used in the standard free Adobe Reader, with free toolbar, for mapping apps.

What you are missing about the GIS support in Acrobat 9, is that is means that GIS is now a STANDARD part of PDF and Reader. Out of the box, EVERY user of Reader can work with the maps - and all 3rd party solutions can now create, manipulate, etc. these GIS enabled features.

Oh, and unlike GeoPDF - GIS in Acrobat/Reader 9 works in both 2D AND 3D

Leonard's point is an important one that isn't well-reflected in the marketing verbiage: Adobe's geospatial extensions to PDF are now just PDF (or will be once published). TerraGo welcomes this news with great enthusiasm and are eagerly anticipating supporting the published standard. Personally, I've been looking forward to this day ever since we demonstrated exploitation of georegistered PDF in 2002 (well before Acrobat supported CAD or 3D, BTW). This is an envelope that we've been pushing for some time and anticipate pushing it further.

I agree with both Leonard's and George's comments about the importance of this announcement - especially in the context of the Adobe.com announcement and the other collaboration features. (Emergency Services are going to love this.)

So much so that I have just pre-ordered my copy of Pro-Extended.

Perhaps Leonard could tell us what formats can be used as sources for the "Map Authoring".

Sorry about the delay in responding!

You can import GeoTIFF, JPEG2000, and KML at this time. We hope to support other formats in the future and also look to our partners - like TerraGo and ESRI to offer other options.

I just learnt that Adobe Acrobat reader 9 is announced along with Acrobat.com.
I visited it. Contains great features. But i got somewhat confused. But i got detailed information about it later here - Adobe introduces Acrobat 9 & Acrobat.com
It also contains detailed and fabulous review of Acrobat 9 and Acrobat.com which was a lot helpful.

Basic coordinate space and simple measuring. No layer controls. Hardly a competitor to GeoPDF...not even close.

ESRI and Adobe will announce a strategic tie and bar the TerraGo folks from the User Conference this year.

Another good idea that threatens the ESRI marketshare will be marginalized in favor of an un-baked "corporate" solution.

Sigh.
