BIM Booms at BE Conference
It wasn't too hard to miss that building information models (BIM) was a key topic that percolated through many geospatial presentations in addition "BIM and Beyond" that was one of the main tracks that was organized at Bentley's BE Conference. Greg Bentley, in his keynote, commented on a common misunderstanding about BIM as simply just rendering building assets but is more significant in providing a better way to manage building infrastructure.
Mark Reichardt, presidnet of the OGC, in his presentation was urging a seamless integration of BIM with geospatial information. "Look at the building not as an individual unit but as part of the urban landscape," said Reichardt. The OGC has a 3D information management working group with a heavy focus on convergence of AEC and geospatial information and technologies. The OGC is working to coordinate stardards agreements with organizations such as the buildingSMART alliance. He also focused on the convergence of geospatial and engineering environments and offered that 3D city models (think CityGML) have multifunctional uses (See also the OGC Web Services Phase 4). As a result the OGC and buildingSMART alliance are major forces behind the Architecture, Engineering, Construction, Owner and Operator (AECOO) test bed , a joint initiative to unite the AECOO community to address and suceed at solving a defined set of interoperability standards.
