Update: Biggest Drawing in the World (using GPS and DHL)

It's been confirmed as a hoax, as many commenters suggested.

But after bloggers pointed out holes in Nordenankar's claim, DHL confirmed to the Telegraph that the artwork was an "entirely fictional project".

A spokeswoman said they had allowed him to film in their Stockholm warehouse as part of a college project, on the understanding that the work went no further than his art school. The GPS package was never sent around the world.

DHL now intends to contact Nordenankar to get him to clarify the origins of his work on his website.

The story goes this was a student's final art project, a self-portrait. He sent a GPS device in a suitcase in a preplanned route around the via specifically selected routes. Those routes were traveled in 55 days by DHL.

Some speculate DHL is behind the viral story.

This may be a foolish question, but I honestly don't know: can a GPS device within a briefcase pick up the signals needed to create such a track?

As a serious recreational sailor I can say that the naval "routes" make absolutely no sense, and no mariner, DHL or other, would follow such routes.

Viral, definitely.

I Agree! For what purpose would a cargo vessel make continuous loops in seas such as the arctic, down into Central Atlantic ( no islands there), Indian Ocean off Madagascar.
It's got to be a *hoax"!

If he was a 'Student' how did he afford to pay for this? The edges of the map also do not match up!

I am not sure I am buying this.

He's not an art student, but an advertising student. Getting a corporate sponsor for your final show is not unheard of, so that's how he could afford it.
