Where 2.0 on Twitter

To my amazement there are very few folks following the where2008 thread on Twitter. Just 70. Perhaps folks are all all on the backchannel IRC? (IRC channel #where2008 on irc.freenode.net)

I guess this is reinforcing my sense of Twitter use in our community which is confirmed, thus far, by the current poll.

It isn't that we don't like Twitter. It's that Twitter is a bad interface for real-time collaboration. We're still Twittering key notes to Twitter, but not conversations...

There was actually quite a bit of Where-related traffic on Twitter. I did not go but felt like I was there with the numerous tweets from various attendees. Just looking at the number of people specifically following where2008 will not give you anything close to a complete picture.

Live tweets were coming from folks in the middle of sessions. I use twhirl rather than the Twitter web interface and it's pretty close to real-time.

I would suggest creating a Twitter account and following various members of the community and you'll get a more complete picture of such events.

Naive question: Why are more folks not tagging tweets with #where2008 if they are discussing the event?

Some did but not all. I couldn't tell you why but I did get a lot of information via Twitter.

I can say there were about 70ish people in the IRC backchannel, and it made for some hilarious (if at times irreverent) reading. Lots of sharp people in there...

One thing I took away from the conference was the idea of using Twitter to communicate location, via various shorthands etc...another medium I'd not considered previously. But I'm very paleo....

There has been some recent back and forth about that concept on the geowanking list. There is a current shorthand in use that, IMO, works well enough for medium that communicates in 140-character chunks.
