Canada Rejects Alliant Bid for MDA Space Unit

Geospatial Business

The $1.32 billion bid by Alliant Techsystems Inc., to purchase the space and radar business of MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates feel through. No real reason was given by the Canadian government, save a lack of benefit to Canada, per the industry minister who sent the rejection letter to Alliant this week. Alliant has 30 days to reply and talks are apparently ongoing.

MDA owns Radarsat, a satellite that retrieves timely imagery of the Canadian North. Historically Radarsat has been funded by the Canadian government (in other words tax payers money). Further more because of the sensibility surrounding Canada's Sovereignty over its northern territories, the threat that Canada has no longer direct access to DATA is of concern. Hence the potential transfer of this technology to a US based company is becoming a political issue. I bet Lobbyists will hard at work over this one.
