Pitney Bowes CEO: Rebranding in Progress

PBBI [MapInfo]

Good thing, I can't figure if its Pitney Bowes MapInfo or Pitney Bowes Software or what.

"We are in the process of actually rebranding across the entire company," [CEO Murray] Martin said. "With 85 acquisitions, it's important for us to look at the whole brand and the whole brand philosophy."

My observation is that MapInfo is losing the ground to ESRI at least in important market. In my country, 10 years ago, everybody (GIS sector) using MapInfo as the main mapping tool. Today ESRI is the s/w of choice for official mapping agencies, I would say 80% of the market.

In Europe (not sure how it's in the US), ERSI does a very good job to set their ground in University. When I installed MI in a University PC, some of my fiend (in Geo-Sciences department) don't even know there is some thing call MapInfo.

As a MapInfo user since 1991 my feeling is that this re-branding and the possible loss of the "MapInfo" reference will further hurt the brand.Unfortuantely I agree with the previous comment on their loss of ground to ESRI. I too remember when everyone had MapInfo over ArcView. I however blame alot of this loss to the inability to capture the educationsal market and the predominant focus on business. These kids are future bsiness leaders and buyers. Just recently we needed to hire a GIS technician and it was almost impossible to find someone out of school with MapInfo experience. Of course it is difficult to compete with ESRI when they give it away for free to schools but surely there is something more that can be done. The funny thing is, is that when our contractors learn MapInfo they prefer it over ArcView!

PB MapInfo appear to be concentrating so hard on the 'inteligent solutions' marketing, they've forgotten existing users who already know GIS is intelligent! I agree that they are aiming too much at new business users and should be working more with schools and universities (where I first used MI over ArcView) or public/emergency organisations.

This rebranding seems entirely consistent with the direction of the marketplace where GI data is just another data type. Differentiation will therefore be around the markets that the current owners of the technology see as most important to them going forward. In PBMI's case it might be location intelligence and in Intergraph's case Homeland Security. Going beyond the rebranding, the interesting developmemt for the future might be the pulling data from corporate systems for additional thematic analysis, as opposed to the current world model of exchanging GI data between GISs.
