What if you held a SQL Server Spatial webinar and no one knew about it?

Jithen Singh's mention of TODAY's live "Map Your Data With Microsoft SQL Sever 2008 Spatial Features" webinar put on by Microsoft gave me pause. I'd not seen anything about it until this post. It bothered me since I'm supposed to know what's going on! I read the geo blogs daily and I would think I'd have seen it. Maybe I don't read the right blogs?

A quick search of Google (Web and blogs) shows ONLY Singh's post noting it. A search using MSN live (Web and feeds) turns up just the event listing in an MSN feed.

Perhaps it's an oddity of the Web? Perhaps Microsoft didn't want the world to know about the live event? (Anyone, it seems can register, so long as they have a LiveID.) Maybe they want most folks to watch the replay? Perhaps Microsoft is still shoring up communications for SQL Server Spatial?

this is so typical of microsoft... I stumbled onto a similar seminar last year and the hoops I had to jump through to register were painless to say the least... I finally gave up as it was painful. Your mention of "I'm supposed to know what's going on" is a little much though as it's crazy for anyone to know everything that everyone is doing, don't you think??

What if Microsoft doesn't care if the geospatial community registers for its webinars?

If nothing else, that webinar shows that any developer can put together a decent web mapping site.

With the current "state of geo" and Microsoft's fledgling status in the field it was probably just a marketing gap, but at some point I wouldn't be surprised to see our "community" become an afterthought for the major players.

This webcast was part of the "24 Hours of SQL Server 2008" and, as such, was part of a larger effort. Sadly, we did not do a good job in promoting this series. Jason's comments about the "marketing gap" are applicable and we will strive to do better in the future.

We have posted a page for 24 Hours of SQL Server 2008 at http://www.microsoft.com/sqlserver/2008/en/us/24hours.aspx. We will be adding to this as other series are developed.

The good news is that we plan to keep the 24 Hours of SQL Server 2008 web page posted indefinitely to promote the “what’s new” of SQL Server 2008. And, as Adena has suggested, most of our webcast viewings do happen after the initial airing, from what I've been told.

We will also put a link to the spatial webcast from our spatial page (http://www.microsoft.com/sqlserver/2008/en/us/spatial-data.aspx).
