Google Maps Search by Neighborhood/Rating

The new addition was announced yesterday. Ok, I get user ratings, but neighborhoods are interesting! Well, not so much for me. I did my generic local search "somerville coffee" and was offered the chance to refine by neighborhood. Alas, the neighborhoods (just 3) were in Boston (Fenway, Downtown, Kenmore Square).

Yes, Google is using what we at Maponics refer to as "macroneighborhoods" - within each "macro" there are actual neighborhoods that are more granular. Google doesn't seem to be using those at this time. (And then, in some places, drilling down even further gets you "subneighborhoods".)

This is a great combination of geography, "local search", and social networking (ratings). A true web 2.0 application (although a somewhat obvious one).

Sorry - no, I didn't mean to imply that. I don't want to start any rumors or anything! I was merely trying to share concepts around the different "types" of neighborhoods.
