Town has four firefighters, paper maps and Pictometry

The good news is the newest full time firefighter in Holmen, Wisconsin has been working as an architectural draftsman and plans to update the paper maps with technology. The local paper notes that the county got a $235,000 grant for Pictometry data/software, which will be available to the town. The new firefighter is not sure the data will help him create a good basemap.

You know your little headline commentary is a little inaccurate. No place in that article does it say "The new firefighter is not sure the data will help him create a good basemap" Nothing even like that! Why is it that you need to put such a negative spin on an article? Personal commentary is one thing, but negative, unwarranted commentary is another.

Thanks for your comment. Here's what I read: "Shaffer said he would be exploring Pictometry as well as other software to see what works best for the village of Holmen. He is hoping to not have to start the project from scratch, but is prepared to do that."

Here is some more good news - the county has ArcGIS Engine based GIS software connected to E9-1-1 and CAD (Computer Aided Dispatch), can map wireless 911 calls, and has GPS in lots of emergency vehicles for remote tracking and in-vehicle nav. The county is quite sophisticated in using modern GIS technology for public safety and emergency dispatch. If you happen to need to call 9-1-1 from a wired or wireless phone from anywhere in the county, you can feel safe that they will locate you in a hurry thanks in part to GIS! The aerial obliques from Pictometry will make it even better, especially for tactical police and fire operations.

PS - I love directionsmag articles and podcasts - I listen to your podcasts on my commute into work in the morning. I just wish there were more of them.
