AU: 10,000+

Autodesk

Randall Newton at AEC News blog notes the 10,000+ number and notes the event will soon catch up with the one time big CAD event: AEC Systems. It's still small compared the ESRI User Conference. Also noteworthy: CADCAMNETtv.com coverage of the event, for those who like their CAD news on "tv."

Huh? ESRI UC had 15k people last year. And ADSK U has 10k+...that's not small, that's 2/3 the size.

Autodesk has 8 million users (some would call those "seats") per its about page. 10,000+ come to its event.

"ESRI software is used in more than 300,000 organizations" per its latest press release. 15,000 come to its event.

Those kinds of numbers can be misleading, I think, Adena -- in all fairness to Autodesk. Autodesk's crowd isn't necessarily the same crowd as ESRI's crowd -- and you also run into the realm of quality vs. quantity. In the respective cross-section of the market in general, you have to realize the use of these tools and gain an understanding of what those companies specialize or focus on, to guage a real understanding of those numbers.

I mean, it's great that 300,000 organization supposedly have ESRI products -- but to what extent are they actually in use? And for what?

And who cares? I agree its like comparing apples and oranges since the products are used by totally different sectors and disciplines. I don't have the numbers to back this up but I suspect that the majority of AU users are doing real time engineering/architectural design where using CAD software is the only way of doing business. Can we say the same of GIS software in any sector?
