GCN Covers MS "Joining" OGC

The article highlights the importance of the company joining OGC, but does not mention Microsoft was a member in the past. That makes this comment give me pause.

OGC Chairman and chief executive officer David Schell told GCN that Microsoft’s decision to join OGC represents a major change in the industry. In its early years, OGC was supported primarily by developers of geospatial tools for vertical markets, such as ESRI and Autodesk. The recent addition of Google and now Microsoft represents a sea change, according to Schell.

Maybe "sea change" includes "ebb and flow", in which case Microsoft's return to OGC is covered by the term. The previous Microsoft membership was initially due to their interest in Intelligent Transportation Systems and ISO TC204, then later due to the involvement of the TerraServer group who were rolling out WMS access. This new Microsoft group seems to be a combination of the GeoTango/Virtual Earth/Database groups so in a sense it's a new approach for Microsoft.

Regarding the quote about Microsoft's ubiquitous presence, it seems to me that Google's presence is even more ubiquitous. However, in terms of perception by "big government", particularly in the US, having Microsoft as a member is a big deal.

It remains to be seen how "stabilizing" this winds up being. Microsoft would not join just to stabilize things, particularly KML. I suspect they have some specs of their own they want to toss into the mix.
