GeoWeb Term Gains Momentum

The term is all over PC World's blog entry reviewing a panel on location and the Web at MIT's Emerging Technologies Conference last week.

I think the post is about this session: Second Earth: Virtual Worlds, Amazing Maps, and the Future of the Metaverse though it doesn't seem to be on the topic of geotagging, where the post focusses. One tidbit from Google's John Hanke:

Hanke says Google has begun to try to index all GeoTagged content on the Web. So far, he says, Google has cataloged several million pieces of content.

I don't really know what that means!

A Google search may help illuminate this...

search for [filetype:kmz inurl:kmz]
1,490,000 hits

search for [filetype:kml inurl:kml]
293,000 hits

Many of these files contain hundreds or thousands of data points.

Also the shared maps created with Google Maps's "MyMaps" feature has a very large number of maps that are indexed as well.

Also, there are many 3D models at the 3D Warehouse. All of this content is indexed. GeoRSS feeds and the likes can be indexed as well.

These are those "several million pieces of data."

Thanks. I wanted to highlight the quote doesn't say indexing content tagged with KML, rather "Hanke says Google has begun to try to index all GeoTagged content on the Web." I understand that to mean two different things. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Or perhaps Mr. Hanke was misquoted?

Consider that Google's recent upgrade to their Google Maps and Google Earth search now shows results for: GeoRSS files (blog entries, news peices and more), KML files, geotagged photos from Panoramio, and geotagged Flickr photos. They are increasingly adding geospatially tagged information to their search indices.
